Jazz Trumpet and Composition New Zealand-born trumpet player and composer Alexis French has made his name as a musician who can cross styles and specialities, and is equally at home playing lead-trumpet with a Big-band as he is playing intimate small group Jazz. Alexis is currently based in Montreal, where he is completing his Master’s degree at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. In Montreal, he plays regularly with his own Quintet, as well as with the Efendi Jazzlab Orchestra, The ONJM, The Joe Sullivan Big-band, Kalmunity Jazz Project, The Atomic Big Band, and the Nicolas Bedard Quintet. In NZ he has played with such Jazz luminaries as Patti Austin, Kurt Elling, Alex Sipiagin, Bob Sheppard, Clay Jenkins, Dick Oatts, and Bennie Maupin. Alexis is Also a frst-call recording musician, and has numerous album credits with best-selling artists. In 2009 he won a NZ Tui award for “Best Jazz Album” for his lead trumpet work on the NZSM Jazz Orchestra’s album “Run For Cover”, featuring Jazz greats Bob Sheppard, Clay Jenkins and Bill Cunlife. December 2013 sees the release of his debut album, entitled “The Cut”, featuring David Bellemare, Nicolas Ferron, Nicolas Bedard, and Mark Nelson.
